The close relationship between the Japanese tattoo and the dark world of the yakuza has helped to imbue this form of artistic expression with an aura of mystery. The culture of irezumi is deep and rich in meanings, shapes and motifs transferred from the colorful woodblock images to the skin, to embellish and protect those who choose to wear them. Through images and analysis, the volume reveals the origin, the meaning and the secrets that lie behind the major motifs of the traditional Japanese tattoo: animals, mythological creatures, Buddhist deities, flowers, historical characters, shunga, yokai ... opens with a brief overview of the history of this art in the Land of the Rising Sun, and includes a gallery of the author's original drawings. Yori Moriarty began her career as a tattoo artist in 2005 together with the American artist Jason Kundell, who was immediately attracted to the traditional Japanese tattoo. In 2007 he made his first trip to Japan and meets the master Osakan Horitoshi Izumi who will teach him everything about the practice of the Japanese tattoo. He will work in his studio between 2008 and 2011.
