Ambassador Mahit Dzmare is traveling to the capital of the Teixcalaan Empire, eager to assume the new assignment that has been assigned to her. When he arrives, however, he finds that his predecessor is dead, but no one is willing to admit that it was not an accidental death. Nor could Mahit be the next victim.
