It is an ample afternoon of July when Cora Bender, along with her husband Gereon and her two-year-old son, arrives on the crowded beach of a large lake outside the city. Any Saturday, any family: a blanket, a picnic basket, some toy; he sat on a deck chair to sunbathe, she peels an apple to the child. Until Cora hears that music vibrate in her ears. Yes, and behind him he sees a group of boys with the stereo on. The rhythm of the low hammer in his temples, more and more deafening, while a black-haired young man lays on his girlfriend kissing her passionately. It's just a moment, Cora suddenly rises, the knife in her hand, and throws on him: a stab at the neck, and when he turns trying to stop her, she still strikes him. And again. As long as Gereon recovers from the shock that almost paralyzed him, he manages to tear away the knife to his wife and to block it on the ground, between the screams of horror of the bathers. When Commissioner Rudolf Grovian puts you under interrogation, Cora has only one answer: “I don’t know.”. But why should a young mother kill a perfect stranger with five stabbed, in front of the eyes of tens of people? Is it really an inexplicable raptus of madness, or is there something else? Buried and fascinated by this fragile and disturbing woman, Grovian decides to dig in the past of Cora. What emerges is disconcerting: a mother obsessed with religion and sin; a sick sister who exploits her guilt to manipulate her... But maybe that's not all. Because Grovian is convinced that the deep scars that mark Cora's forehead and arms are not the only ones that carry on.
